Belinda Bencic is through to the third round after a straightforward 6-3, 6-1 win over Martina Trevisan. Only three unforced errors for the Tokyo Olympic gold medalist in the second set and eight overall. She advances to face the winner of today’s match between Japan’s Misaki Doi and No 23 seed Jessica Pegula of the United States, which is second on Court 17.

A bit of a wobble from Raducanu, who gives back one of the breaks from 40-15 on her serve. She’s still ahead 6-2, 4-2 with Zheng to serve as the match enters its second hour.

Bencic is a couple of games from round three after taking a 6-3, 4-0 lead over Trevisan. Meanwhile on Court 17, the young American up-and-comer Reilly Opelka has taken a first-set tiebreaker over Lorenzo Musetti.

Raducanu has just broken Zhang again in a 16-point marathon for a 6-1, 3-0 lead. The 18-year-old closed the seesaw game with a crisp forehand winner from the baseline. That’s 21 winners on the day against a scant five unforced errors.

Elsewhere on the outer courts, seventh-seeded Iga Swiatek has dropped the opening set against France’s Fiona Ferro, 6-3. They’re on serve at 2-all in the second.

Raducanu has broken Zhang in the opening game of the second set. Zhang saved a first break point at 30-40 with a backhand winner at 30-40, then a second with a 98mph service winner for deuce, but finally blinked on the third with an unforced error off the backhand side. Raducanu then consolidated after falling behind 15-30 on her serve, capping the hold with a 97mph ace out wide. Fantastic stuff from Britain’s emerging star, who is closing in on a spot in the third round.

Ashleigh Barty has taken the oppening set from Clara Tauson, 6-1. The set lasted 31 minutes in all, including a marathon 13-minute second game that featured no fewer than 10 break-point chances. The top-seeded Aussie has struck 12 winners to 10 unforced errors, compared to five winners and 14 UFEs for Tauson.

Emma Raducanu has taken the first set from Zhang Shuai in 31 minutes. After holding for 5-1, the British teenager pushed Zhang on her serve only for the Chinese to hold from love-30 down. From there Raducanu held at love, closing out the set with her 11th and 12th winners of the afternoon (against only three unforced errors in all).

Meanwhile on Armstrong, Belinda Bencic is out in front of Italy’s Martina Trevisan early in the first set. The No 11 seed and recently minted Olympic gold medalist squandered three break-point chances after racing ahead to love-40 on Trevisan’s serve to open the match, but answered with back-to-back winners from the baseline to secure the early break. They’ve traded holds since then and Bencic is now serving at 3-2.

Emma Raducanu has taken a double-break lead over Zhang Shuai on Court 10. Shuai only faced two break points in a slog of a fifth game that spanned 18 points in all, saving the first with a backhand winner from the baseline. But the opportunistic Raducanu stepped up and ripped a forehand return winner on the second, taking this opening set by the scruff. She will serve for a 5-1 lead after the change of ends.

Zhang Shuai is on the board, capping an easy hold of serve with an 88mph second-serve ace to follow her opening wobble. Raducanu then holds for 3-1.

Meanwhile on Ashe, Ashleigh Barty opened with a hold in her second-round matchup with Denmark’s Clara Tauson, then broke Tauson for a 2-0 lead after a marathon 24-point second game that spanned more than 13 minutes. Tauson saved nine break points before finally giving in on the 10th.

Raducanu has backed up the break for a 2-0 lead. After falling behind love-30 in her opening service game, the 18-year-old rattled off four quick points including a forehand volley winner and a 88mph second-serve service winner.

Well, well, well. Emma Raducanu has just broken China’s Zhang Shuai at love in the opening service game of their second-round match on Court 10, helped along by a double fault. A promising start for the young British standout.
